“Chained 2.0”

Normally I'd have a strict policy about repeating a song from an earlier album but I had to break it with this one. I had originally written it quite some time ago in response to a student of mine Alex Townsend, a drummer and all around wonderfully wacky dude. He idolized an older cousin of his, who was also a drummer. Alex also loved the Black Crowes. So I did what I could to write a song that the Black Crowes could have written. I think I managed to rip their style off pretty good!

Tragically, Alex passed away a short time later. He is still loved and missed, but as a result I got to know this adored cousin of his Wil Kramer, who became not only a dear friend, but the drummer for Ism f.c. We all felt connected to the song. Our other guitarist Maurice Liddy knew Alex as well, and we enjoyed playing it, for reasons beyond the music itself. During each play of the song I always would remember Alex at one point or another.

We allowed the song to morph from the Big in Japan album's version, I find this new incarnation of the song to embody the qualities that Maurice and Wil brought to Ism f.c. One funny fact: one of our friends and a former co-worker, Mel Melkonian, would often check in on a school matter during our rehearsals. I don't think he ever walked in while we were playing another song. It was the weirdest thing. I believe he thought this was the only song we knew how to play. He was kind enough to never make a snide comment.

That's the story of “Chained 2.0.”
